This project marks a key milestone in regional research and innovation. It is based on close collaboration between the industrial sector and our region’s academic centres of excellence:
- Industrial partner : The innovative company STARKLAB.
- Academic partners : The UCEIV and the LMPA at the Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale (ULCO), as well as the LAMIH (UMR CNRS 8201) at the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France (UPHF).
In a world undergoing an energy and ecological transition, waste management and the reduction of pollutant emissions have become key priorities for local authorities, industry and the public. Domestic waste incineration, although often used as a local treatment solution, generates industrial fumes rich in toxic substances such as fine particulate matter, nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon monoxide (CO). These emissions, when not properly filtered or recovered, pose a serious threat to public health, air quality and ecosystems. With this in mind, the PUVAFIN project aims to develop an innovative solution for the purification and recovery of industrial flue gases – particularly those generated by domestic incinerators – in order to combine environmental effectiveness, technical feasibility and economic viability. This project is based on CARBOdown technology, which, following gas recirculation, enables conventional combustion processes to operate using a method known as oxy-combustion. This oxy-combustion process thus replaces the nitrogen present in the air with CO₂ produced by combustion, thereby yielding a stream of pure CO₂ at the combustion outlet for easier conversion into methane or methanol. This synergy between pollution control and resource recovery not only helps to minimise environmental impacts, but also transforms a polluting waste stream into a usable resource.
As part of this project, seven main objectives have been defined:
- To demonstrate that the incinerator’s performance is not affected by the CARBOdown system
- To validate the CARBOdown process on a domestic boiler, in the context of biomass and household waste combustion
- To purify industrial flue gases by optimising Terrao technology
- To recover energy from industrial flue gases produced by the incinerator
- To capture CO₂ from a household waste incinerator
- Utilising purified CO₂ to form platform molecules such as methane and methanol
- An innovative deactivation procedure for catalytic materials, coupled with mathematical modelling
This project is funded by the European Union and the Hauts-de-France Region.
