Introduction and career history

Sébastien Royer is a University Professor at the Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale (ULCO), within the École d’Ingénieurs du Littoral Côte d’Opale (EiLCO) and the UCEIV UR 4492. After qualifying as a Process Engineer from the University of Technology of Compiègne (2000), he went on to obtain a DEA in applied chemical kinetics (Paris VI – ENSPM), followed by a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Laval University (Quebec, Canada) in 2004, where he specialised in heterogeneous catalysis. Following two postdoctoral fellowships at IFPEN and the University of Lille 1, he joined the University of Poitiers in 2006 and defended his HDR in 2013.

From 2006 to 2015, at IC2MP (University of Poitiers, CNRS), he developed research focused on the synthesis and characterisation of materials for heterogeneous catalysis, with applications in environmental science and fine chemicals. During this period, he was also an Associate Professor at Laval University (2010–2015).

Appointed Professor at the University of Lille in 2015, he founded and leads the MATCAT team – Materials for Catalysis, established in 2016 within the UCCS. At the same time, he developed the UPCAT (UP-scaling of CATalysts) technology platform, dedicated to the synthesis, formulation and upscaling of catalysts. These activities have enabled him to build a research team, develop academic and industrial collaborations, and support the transition of materials from the laboratory to pre-pilot scale.

Since September 2024, he has been a Professor at ULCO, EiLCO and UCEIV. His research is currently focused primarily on decarbonisation, energy and environmental issues : CO₂ activation and conversion, ammonia synthesis and cracking, hydrogen production and storage, process electrification, porous materials for separation and adsorption, and polymer recovery.

Research topics

Current research focuses on the design of functional materials, understanding how they evolve under reaction conditions, and their application in catalytic and adsorption processes. The main areas of research at present are :
